Oriel Myrddin Gallery

Contemporary craft and art gallery

The Gallery

Oriel Myrddin Gallery

Oriel Myrddin Gallery is situated in the Old Art School in Carmarthen - a beautiful listed Victorian building a stone's throw from St Peter's Church. Since 1991 the building has housed Oriel Myrddin Gallery, a contemporary craft gallery showing a changing programme of exhibitions.

In 1991 Oriel Myrddin Gallery was established with commitment from
the local authority and the Arts Council of Wales. Since that time it has
flourished, with an impressive range of exhibitions, art education
activity as well as a lovely gallery shop, which supports many of
Wales' most prestigious craft makers.

It had seemed that the beautiful listed building might be
demolished. Fortunately a groundswell of local support and artist
lobbying secured a reprieve and a reincarnation occurred … from Art
School to Art Gallery.

The building was designed as Carmarthen's Art School by
George Morgan, a celebrated local architect. It was completed in
1891 and opened its doors in 1892. It has been central to the artistic
lifeblood of the town since that time.

We hope you will continue to treasure the building and support
the gallery.

Yn adeilad yr Hen Ysgol Gelf yng Nghaerfyrddin mae Oriel Myrddin – sef adeilad rhestredig a hardd o oes Fictoria, dafliad carreg o Eglwys Sant Pedr. Er 1991, mae'r adeilad wedi bod yn gartref i Oriel Myrddin, oriel gelf gyfoes sydd â rhaglen newidiol o arddangosfeydd.

Sefydlwyd Oriel Myrddin ym 1991 yn sgil cael ymrwymiad gan yr
awdurdod lleol a chan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru. Yn y cyfamser
mae'r Oriel wedi mynd o nerth i nerth – gan gynnal amrywiaeth
arbennig o arddangosfeydd ochr yn ochr â gweithgareddau celf i ysgolion, yn ogystal â bod yn gartref i siop ddymunol dros ben sy'n gwerthu gwaith llawer o grefftwyr gorau Cymru.

Ar un adeg yr oedd posibilrwydd y gallai'r adeilad rhestredig hynod brydferth gael ei ddymchwel. Yn ffodus, yn sgil cefnogaeth leol law yn llaw ag ymgyrch gan artistiaid, llwyddwyd i achub yr adeilad a'i weddnewid … gan droi'r Ysgol Gelf yn Oriel Gelf.

George Morgan, pensaer lleol uchel ei barch, a ddyluniodd yr adeilad gwreiddiol a hynny i fod yn gartref i Ysgol Gelf Caerfyrddin. Cwblhawyd yr adeilad ym 1891 a derbyniwyd y myfyrwyr cyntaf ym 1892. Ac mae'r adeilad wedi bod yn rhan annatod o fywyd celfyddydol y dref byth oddi ar hynny.

Ein gobaith yw y byddwch yn dal i drysori'r adeilad ac i gefnogi'r oriel.

Ymhlith y rheiny sy'n rhan o raglen arddangosfeydd Oriel Myrddin mae artistiaid a chrefftwyr o'r radd flaenaf o Gymru, y Deyrnas Unedig a thramor.

Submission guidelines for artists

Oriel Myrddin Gallery are pleased to receive information about the work  of professional artists and craft makers from Wales, the UK and beyond.  We hold an exhibitions programming meeting every 3 months – please contact the gallery to find out the date of the next submission deadline.

We usually present eight exhibitions per year.

As a general guide approximately 50% will have a craft and/or design bias and about 50% a fine art bias. About 50% of the exhibitions in any one year will represent Welsh artists/makers. At least two of these shows in any one year will be originated by the gallery. We usually present a mixed group selling show at Christmas .

Submission process

Please submit proposals and expressions of interest for the attention of:

Meg Anthony, Gallery Manager,  Oriel Myrddin Gallery, Church Lane, Carmarthen, SA31 1LH.

Your submission should include:

Covering letter, dated, stating any existing commitments at other galleries *(hard copy)

CV (hard copy)

Short artists’ statement stating why you want to show in Oriel Myrddin Gallery (hard copy)

A CD with a minimum of 12 images of works  made in the previous 3 years.  Preferably jpeg images (we work on a Microsoft programme).

Alternatively up to 4 films

We will contact you by letter following the programming meeting.  Please include an SAE if you would  like your information to be returned.   Please note, any submissions by email will be looked at by the Gallery Manager, but will not necessarily be acknowledged.
We receive many expressions of interest, as a small gallery we are only able to work with a few of the artists who contact us.  However we really appreciate all submissions.
