Current Projects
Intergenerational Pilot Project

We are currently working together with engagecymru, the poet John Bilsborough,
Argel and Tawelan Care Homes in Carmarthen and Yr 5 Crosshands School
on an intergenerational pilot project which aims to build understanding
across the generations through art, adding to the quality of life of
older people, combatting social isolation and building self esteem.

Visit to 'A Winters Tale', the pupils from Crosshands acted as gallery guides to the residents of Argel and Tawelan Care Homes.

Princes Trust for Children and the Arts
With further funding from the Princes Trust for Children and the Arts poet Emily Hinshelwood and sculptor and art educator Lynne Bebb are working with three Carmarthenshire primary schools on a project combining art and poetry in relation to the show 'The Orchard' and 'A Winter's Tale'.

Story Books based on 'A Winter's Tale'

Collecting ideas for stories
Funding from the Princes Trust for Children and the Arts enabled Oriel Myrddin Gallery to work with sculptor Angharad Pearce Jones on an ambitious outreach project with four Carmarthenshire schools inspired by Tony Cragg's installation 'New Stones, Newton's Tones'.
All four schools worked together with Angharad and the gallery
education officer to construct permanent sculptures from recycled
plastics for each school.
Angharad will continue to work with Maes yr Yrfa School in 2010.

'they’re
building something that requires individual and team effort, it
develops a very important life skill and helps them to be more
sensitive to each other’s needs. And they are so relaxed and comfortable, there is no pressure and no right or wrong.
It really is a wonderful learning experience' Teacher Cefneithin P.S.

Sculpture Maesyyrfa Secondary School

With
funding from the Welsh Assembly Small Schools Fund the gallery has
worked together with award winning Cardiff based animators Cinetig and four small schools to make a stop motion film using
recycled plastics. The final film is called 'Ffrwydro Lliwiau' 'Colour Explosion' and was premiered at Crosshands Cinema. It can also be seen via Oriel Myrddin's Facebook fans page.
In conjunction with the show 'Crafted' contemporary weaver Ainsley Hillard
held a series of workshops in the gallery with a group from the local
Women's Aid Refuge in which she introduced them to different techniques
of weaving.
'A lovely location, inspiring. A really good experience, feeling part of the life of the gallery, great to be challenged to learn something new'

We
have continued to build on our expertise in working with children in
the Foundation Phase with a residency in Meidrim School with artist
Helen Astley.

Forthcoming
Oriel Myrddin Gallery has been awarded a 'Reach the Heights' award by ACW to work with engage cymru and Aberystwyth Arts Centre
on a pilot project to support volunteer placements which offer work
experience to vulnerable and hard to reach teenagers. The project will
take place during 2010 and 2011.
