HUNK WILLIAMS
Hunk Williams is a Welsh textile artist whose work embraces playfulness, imperfection and individuality. For the Craft Trail he has created a large patchwork quilt that gathers together fragments of story, stitching motifs from Clive Hicks-Jenkins’ Hansel and Gretel alongside words from Welsh folklore. The gingerbread house and tulips of Clive’s tale appear with names such as Bwbach, a household goblin; Gwyllion, mountain spirits or hags; and Canwyll Corff, the corpse candles said to flicker along old paths to the grave.
Made from reclaimed fabrics and vintage textiles, the quilt celebrates bold colour, texture and imagination while also carrying an undercurrent of folklore. Like much of Hunk’s work, it resists the uniformity of mass production, instead revelling in character, humour and the spirit of the handmade. The quilt brings together fabric and story in a way that is playful, curious and memorable.
